Nursing is a profession focused on the care of individuals, families and communities to enable them attain and maintain a healthy, quality life.

Ascertaining the body temperature of patients by using thermometer, administering medicines or an injection, bandaging an injury – these are the general images that unfold in our mind when the word ‘nurse’ is mentioned.  But there is much more to ‘nursing’ than what we normally think of. There are Hospital Nurses, Psychology Nurses, School Nurses and Operation Nurses – to name a few.

Nursing is a professional course. To become a nurse you need to  complete B.Sc (Nursing) graduation course of four years. You can also join a Diploma Course of 3½ years in Nursing. After completing either of these courses, you have to register yourself in an Institution called Nursing Council and Registering.

Those who desire to become Nursing Tutors can pursue Post-graduation and Doctorate Degree in Nursing.  Like for doctors, there are many opportunities for nursing specializations. Diploma Courses are available in Cardio-vascular, Thoracic nursing and Neuro nursing. The Health Services sector requires professionally trained nurses to manage Multi-specialty hospitals and medical facilities.

At present, fabulous opportunities are available for Nurses in the United States of America. In USA, the expected ratio of Nurse–Patient is less and hence the constant demand for nurses! In addition to earning in dollars, eligible nurses are also provided with family visa.

To work as a Nurse in the US, you should have successfully passed the  International English in Training Systems (IELTS) test and the test conducted by the Commission of Graduate Foreign Nursing Services, which is conducted only in few places in the world  (in India it is conducted at Cochin and Bangalore). In the United Kingdom, the practitioner must hold a current and valid registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, without which the title ‘Registered Nurse’ will not be granted.

If you want to pursue Nursing as a career, you should be basically ‘good-natured’ and service minded. You must be a warm personality, wearing a smile not only on your lips but within your heart. Concern for people, especially sick ones, with a positive attitude is a must. You have to handle patients and look after their needs without getting impatient.  At times you may be required to work 24 hours a day.

Even though the word nurse always brings the image of a woman dressed in white, growing number of men are also entering the field as it is an ideal career choice!
