Snow in the Sahara?
When I imagine a desert, I picture golden sand, blazing sunshine, and people searching for shade. Snow is probably the last thing I would expect to see there! But believe it or not, the Sahara Desert has experienced snowfall.
The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, stretching across much of North Africa. It is famous for its extreme heat, but some parts of the desert can become surprisingly cold at night and during winter.
A White Surprise in Algeria
One of the best-known places where snow has appeared is Aïn Séfra, a town in Algeria surrounded by the Sahara. It is sometimes called the "Gateway to the Desert."
When snow falls there, the orange sand dunes can become covered with a thin white blanket. The combination of bright snow and golden sand looks almost like a scene from a fantasy movie!
How Can a Hot Desert Get Snow?
The secret is temperature.
A desert is not necessarily hot all the time. The word "desert" actually describes a place that receives very little precipitation. Deserts can be hot or cold.
The Sahara can become extremely cold after sunset because dry air and clear skies allow heat to escape quickly. During winter, temperatures can occasionally drop below freezing in some areas.
If the atmosphere contains enough moisture and the temperature is low enough, snow can form—even over the desert.
Does the Snow Stay for Long?
Usually, no. Snow in the Sahara is rare, and when it does fall, it generally doesn't remain for very long. The strong sunlight and warmer temperatures can quickly melt it.
That makes these snowy scenes especially unusual. People may wake up to a white desert one morning and find the familiar golden dunes again soon afterward.
A Desert Full of Surprises
The Sahara teaches me that nature doesn't always follow the pictures in our imagination. A desert can be scorching hot during the day, freezing cold at night, and occasionally covered in snow!
So, if someone asks me whether it can snow in a desert, I know exactly what I'll say: Yes! Even the Sahara can sometimes get a snowy surprise.
