Grandma’s Diwali Memories: Then and Now!

How diwali celebrated then and now?
Grandma's Childhood Memories
Published on

Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived a little girl named Meera. She loved Diwali, but the Diwali she knew from her grandmother’s stories was very different from the one she celebrated today.

One evening, as the family prepared for Diwali, Meera asked her grandma, “Grandma, what was Diwali like when you were my age?” Grandma smiled, her eyes sparkling like the diyas, and began her story.

“Ah, Meera,” Grandma said, “back in my childhood, Diwali was very simple but magical. We didn't have electric lights or glittery fireworks. We lit tiny clay diyas all around our homes. The flickering flames made the house look warm and welcoming. My cousins and I made rangoli with rice flour and flower petals, and we shared homemade sweets like laddoos, adhirasam, and jaggery treats. We played simple games, ran around with sparklers, and everyone in the village came together to celebrate.”

Meera’s eyes grew wide. “Wow, it sounds so cozy!” she said.

Grandma chuckled. “It was, dear. Today, things are brighter — LED lights, big fireworks, and colorful decorations fill the streets. Children like you have so many toys and modern sweets. But some traditions, like lighting diyas, sharing food, and spending time with family, are still the same.”

Meera thought for a moment and said, “I like both Diwalis — the old one feels magical and the new one feels exciting!” Grandma nodded. “Exactly, Meera. The heart of Diwali is happiness, love, and togetherness. Whether it’s the Diwali of the past or the one today, it always brings light to our hearts.”

That evening, as they lit diyas together, Meera felt a connection — a bridge between the Diwali of long ago and the Diwali of today, shining bright with memories and joy. ✨
