Pangolin: The Scaly Mammal!

Have you ever heard of a creature that looks like a pine cone, a lizard, and an anteater all rolled into one? Meet the pangolin, one of the most unusual animals on our planet! Pangolins are often called 'scaly anteaters,' and it's easy to see why. Their bodies are covered in hard, overlapping scales made of keratin—the same stuff that makes up your fingernails! There are eight species of pangolins, and they live in different parts of Africa and Asia. Some are as small as a house cat, while others can be as big as a medium-sized dog. Despite their different sizes, all pangolins have one thing in common: they love to eat insects, especially ants and termites!

The Ultimate Bug-Eater

Pangolins don’t have teeth, but that doesn’t stop them from being expert insect hunters. They have incredibly long, sticky tongues - sometimes longer than their entire bodies! These tongues are perfect for reaching deep into ant nests and termite mounds. Once a pangolin finds its favourite food, it slurps up the insects with its tongue, just like how you might enjoy a spaghetti noodle!

To help them dig into these insect homes, pangolins have strong claws. These claws are perfect for tearing open ant hills and termite mounds, giving them access to a tasty buffet. Some species even use their claws to climb trees to find ants hiding in the bark or leaves.

A Night Owl

Pangolins are nocturnal, which means they are most active at night. During the day, they sleep in burrows or hollow trees to stay safe from predators. At night, they come out to hunt for their insect dinner. Their excellent sense of smell helps them sniff out ant and termite colonies, even in the dark.

Super Shy and Super Special

Despite their tough appearance, pangolins are actually very shy creatures. They try to avoid humans and other animals as much as possible. But being shy hasn’t kept them safe. Unfortunately, pangolins are one of the most trafficked animals in the world. People hunt them for their scales, which are wrongly believed to have special medicinal powers, and for their meat.
