Reading is Fun! 8 Useful Tips to Develop a Reading Habit

Yardhini Devaraj

Hi there! I’m a kid who loves reading, and I want to share some tips on how I developed my reading habit. Trust me, getting into the habit of reading is something that can make you feel really proud and excited. I know it might sound tricky at first, but it’s actually fun once you get started.

1. Start with Books That Interest You

When I first started reading, I wasn’t really into books. But once I found stories that I really liked, it was easier to keep reading. I started with comic books and graphic novels because they had cool pictures and fun adventures. If you love superheroes, try a comic book about them! Or if you’re into animals, there are lots of books with awesome stories about them.

It’s super important to pick books that make you excited. If you like space, look for books about outer space. If you like animals or dinosaurs, there are so many fun books about them too! When the story is something you care about, reading becomes fun and not a boring task.

2. Make Reading Part of Your Daily Routine

My parents made sure that reading became a part of my daily life. They made me a cozy reading spot with pillows and a blanket where I could relax and enjoy my book. Every day after school, I would spend a little time reading. It wasn’t too long, just about 15 minutes or so at first, and that helped me get used to reading every day.

When something becomes part of your routine, like brushing your teeth or eating dinner, it’s easier to keep doing it. So, try setting aside some time each day for reading—maybe before bed or right after you come home from school.

3. Let Your Imagination Run Wild

One of the best parts about reading is how it lets you use your imagination. When you read a book, you can picture the characters, places, and adventures in your head, and that’s super cool! I found that if I read stories that were full of exciting adventures or mysteries, I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.

Sometimes, I even try to make my own stories. You don’t always have to read to follow someone else’s story—writing your own is another great way to enjoy reading!

4. Make Reading a Fun Activity, Not a Task

If someone tells you that you have to read, it might start to feel like a homework assignment, and that can make reading less fun. But if reading becomes a fun thing you do on your own, you’ll start to love it. I like to make reading feel like a game. Sometimes I time myself to see how fast I can read a page or a chapter (but I don’t rush through it—I just make it a challenge for fun). Or, if I really like a book, I try to read for a certain amount of time without getting distracted by anything else.

I also love reading with friends or family. When my parents read to me or with me, it makes the experience feel extra special. You can even read out loud and act out the voices of the characters, which is so much fun! The more you make reading a playful experience, the more you’ll want to do it.

5. Be Curious and Ask Questions

Whenever I don’t understand something in a book, I always ask questions. Sometimes I’ll ask my parents or a friend what a word means, or I’ll look it up on my own if I can. Asking questions while reading helps me learn new things and makes me feel smart! The more curious you are, the more you’ll get out of the books you read.

And remember, it’s okay if you don’t understand everything the first time. Just keep going, and you’ll start to understand more and more as you read. Each book teaches you something new, whether it’s about people, places, or things you never even knew existed!

6. Make It a Family Activity

When my family spends time reading together, it’s not only fun, but it also shows me how much everyone values books. My mom and dad often read alongside me, and sometimes we talk about the books we’re reading. They ask me about my story, and I tell them about what’s happening. It’s fun to share what I’m learning or what parts I like best. Sometimes we even read the same book and then talk about it afterward.

If you have a sibling or a friend who loves the same kind of books, you can even start a mini book club with each other! It helps you get excited about what’s coming next in the story, and you can have fun talking about it together.

7. Don’t Be Afraid to Try Different Genres

At first, I thought I only liked one kind of book, but then I started to try different genres, and I found so many new things I loved! There are adventure books, funny books, mystery books, and even books about real-life heroes or historical events. I even read some poetry and really liked how it made me feel.

So, if you feel like reading one type of book, that’s awesome. However, don’t be afraid to try something new. You might discover a whole new world of stories that you never even knew existed!

8. Celebrate Your Progress

Every time I finish a book, I feel proud of myself. Whether it’s a small chapter book or a big, thick one, I know that reading is something I’ve accomplished. I also like to celebrate by talking about the book or even drawing pictures of my favourite parts. You can celebrate each time you finish a book, too. Maybe you can get a special treat. The more you celebrate your reading victories, the more you’ll feel motivated to keep going!

Final Thoughts

Reading isn’t just something you have to do - it’s something you can love to do if you find the right books and make it a fun habit. So, find stories that excite you, create a cozy reading space, ask questions, and share your adventures with others. Before you know it, reading will become one of your favourite things to do. Just remember: the more you read, the more fun you’ll have with it!
