Is the Lava Really Blue?

Here's the surprising part: the lava is not actually blue!

The lava inside the volcano is still the usual glowing red or orange. The blue colour comes from sulfur gas escaping through cracks in the volcano.

When the hot sulfur gas reaches the air, it catches fire because the temperature is extremely high—sometimes over 600°C. The burning sulfur creates beautiful electric-blue flames that can rise several metres into the air. At night, they shine so brightly that they make the volcano look as if it is erupting blue fire.

Blue Fire Volcano: A Beautiful but Dangerous Place

Even though the blue flames are stunning, Kawah Ijen is not a place to visit without care. The volcano releases strong sulfur gases that can be harmful to breathe. Visitors and scientists wear special masks to protect themselves.

The volcano is also home to one of the world's largest sulfur mines. Every day, brave miners carry heavy blocks of yellow sulfur down the mountain, doing one of the toughest jobs on Earth.
