Can a Fruit Cost Thousands of Dollars?
Imagine walking into a fruit shop and finding a melon that costs more than a brand-new smartphone—or even a motorcycle! It sounds unbelievable, but in Japan, some fruits are so rare and special that people pay thousands of dollars to buy them.
Meet the Luxury Melons
One of the world's most expensive fruits is the Yubari King Melon, grown only in the town of Yubari on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. These melons are famous for their perfect round shape, sweet taste, and beautiful orange flesh.
Farmers take great care of every melon. They carefully control the amount of sunlight, water, and nutrients each fruit receives.
Sometimes, they even grow only one melon on a plant so that it gets all the energy to become as perfect as possible.
Why Are They So Expensive?
Unlike ordinary fruits, luxury melons are often bought as special gifts rather than everyday food. In Japan, giving a high-quality fruit is a way of showing respect, gratitude, or celebrating an important occasion.
At special auctions, a pair of Yubari King Melons has sold for millions of Japanese yen. In 2019, two melons were auctioned for 5 million yen, which was more than ₹30 lakh at the time! Most melons don't cost nearly that much, but they are still much more expensive than the fruits we usually buy.
Other Fancy Fruits
Japan is also famous for its:
Square watermelons
Heart-shaped strawberries
Giant grapes
Perfectly shaped apples
Some of these fruits are grown more for their unique appearance than for everyday eating.
Would You Buy One?
Most people would probably choose a smartphone over a super-expensive melon! But these luxury fruits show us that food can be a deeply rooted part of a country's culture and traditions, not just something we eat.
So, the next time you enjoy a slice of watermelon or melon, remember that somewhere in the world, a fruit just like it might be worth more than the latest smartphone.
Isn't that amazing?
