Every morning, Aarav got ready for school with his mother. He brushed his teeth, wore his blue uniform, and packed his little lunchbox. Then he looked for his shoes.

“Where are my shoes?” Aarav asked.

He looked under the bed. Nothing. He looked behind the curtain. Nothing. At last, he found one shoe under the sofa and the other near the kitchen door.

“That is strange,” Aarav said, putting them on.

The next morning, one shoe was missing again. Aarav searched under the bed, behind the door, and even inside his school bag. He finally found it hiding behind a big pillow.

“Why do you keep hiding?” Aarav asked, laughing.

The same thing happened the next day. This time, Aarav found one shoe inside his toy box. He was beginning to wonder if someone was playing a joke on him.

Then, one morning, Aarav heard a tiny sound from behind the cupboard.

“Please don’t take me to school.”

Aarav froze. He slowly bent down and looked behind the cupboard. There was his blue shoe, hiding in the corner.

“Did you just talk?” Aarav asked.

“Yes,” said the shoe. “And I really don't want to go to school.”

Aarav sat on the floor beside it. “But why? I like school. You should like it too.”

The shoe gave a little sigh. “You make me run all day. You jump over stones, splash through puddles, and kick balls. I get dirty and tired.”

Aarav looked at the shoe. It was covered with yesterday’s mud.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “But you help me do so many things.”

“I know,” said the shoe. “But yesterday you left me outside in the rain. My laces were soaked!”

Aarav remembered. He had rushed inside after playing and completely forgotten about his shoes.

“I promise I’ll take better care of you,” he said. “I’ll clean you when you get dirty and keep you inside when it rains.”

The shoe did not answer immediately. Aarav waited patiently.

“Will you really?” the shoe finally asked.

“Yes,” Aarav said. “And I’ll try not to jump into every puddle I see.”

The shoe slowly came out from behind the cupboard. Just then, Aarav heard his mother calling, “Aarav! The school bus is here!”

Aarav quickly put on his shoes and ran to the door. But just before he stepped outside, he stopped. He looked down at his shoes.

“Wait,” he said.

He took them off and wiped away the little bits of dirt that were stuck to them. The shoe looked surprised.

“What are you doing?”

“I made you a promise,” Aarav said. “I want to start keeping it now.”

The shoe was quiet. Aarav put it on again and walked towards the bus.

That day, Aarav still ran and played at school. He still got his shoes a little dirty. But when he came home, he did not leave them outside. He cleaned them, dried them, and placed them neatly near the door.

The next morning, Aarav came downstairs. His shoes were waiting. He looked under the bed just to make sure. There was nothing under the bed. He checked behind the curtain. There was nothing behind the curtain.

Both shoes were right where he had left them.

“I’m ready,” one shoe whispered.

“Me too,” said the other.

Aarav smiled and slipped them on. From that day on, the shoes never hid again. They had discovered that school was not so frightening after all. Aarav had discovered something too:

Taking care of the things that take care of us is a promise worth keeping.
