There once was a beautiful farmhouse in the Yercaud hills called Garden Green. It was owned by a rich man named Robert. In this farm grew up a Pomeranian named Pomo, whom the owner had brought as a puppy from Germany.
It so happened that around the same time, one of the nanny goats on the farm gave birth to a beautiful lamb. The owner named the baby goat Gogo.
Pomeranian puppy Pomo and Gogo the lamb became thick friends. Pomo was never chained; he spent most of his time in the goat shed just to be with his friend.
The owner understood the friendship between Pomo and Gogo and encouraged it by allowing them to play and enjoy themselves together.
The Pomeranian expressed himself by barking softly, and the lamb would bleat sweetly in reciprocation. Pomo acted like a big brother to Gogo and was very protective and possessive. He used to become nervous whenever the owner's son, Hubert, picked up Gogo and fondled him, showing his disapproval with a low growl.
At first, Gogo's mother feared and distrusted the Pomeranian, but later she accepted the sweet bond between her baby and Pomo.
As time passed, both Gogo and Pomo grew up. Gogo the goat became a big billy goat, while Pomo remained small. Still, Pomo considered himself the big brother.
One noon, Pomo smelled a carnivore—probably a panther. With his ears pricked, he became restless and scanned the bushes that dotted the property with a sense of anxiety. He was sure some evil thing was lurking nearby. Though his friend the billy goat was no longer a helpless lamb, Pomo did not want to take any chances. He kept himself ready for any eventuality, knowing that panthers are deadly and their attacks are fast like lightning.
Then, what he feared happened. A panther crept out of the bushes and started crawling toward Gogo.
Letting out a loud bark, the brave Pomeranian dashed toward the spotted devil. Before the panther could realize what was happening, the small dog stood right before him, baring his teeth, eyes filled with fire, and his body hair completely erect, giving him the fierce look of an angry porcupine.
White porcupine or Pomeranian?
The panther was confused. White or black, a porcupine is a porcupine, the panther muttered to himself, and decided to flee, especially since he still had half a dozen painful quills embedded in his body from his last encounter with a mother porcupine!
Billy Goat Gogo was overwhelmed with gratitude. "Thank you, Pomo, for saving me from the panther!" Gogo seemed to say. "You are welcome, dear. Leave alone the panther; even if a Siberian tiger tried to attack you, I would have faced it and chased it away!" Pomo seemed to reply.
When things were going smoothly, Robert the owner decided to sell the farm and go back to his home country. One by one, prospective buyers came to look at the property. Both Pomo and Gogo instinctively understood what was happening, and they grew very sad and sorrowful.
The following Sunday morning, a fat man and his lean wife came to buy the farm. The owner took them on a tour of the property and finally showed them Pomo the dog and Gogo the billy goat.
The master said to the would-be buyer, "I am prepared to sell this farm for the price you are offering, but I have one condition: you must keep my dog and my billy goat. Under no circumstances should you ever try to separate them."
"Agreed! I am an animal lover too," said the buyer with a warm smile.
The buyer walked over to Gogo, stroked his horns, and then went to the Pomeranian to gently ruffle his body hair. Both Gogo and Pomo heaved a huge sigh of relief. They understood that they—and their unbreakable friendship—were finally safe.
